Car Cost Per Mile Calculator

The DriveCost cost per mile calculator converts all recurring vehicle operating expenses into a single cents-per-mile metric. For a typical compact SUV driven 15,000 miles per year at today's average fuel and maintenance rates, operating costs run approximately 12.8¢ per mile ($1,920 per year) excluding depreciation, or 38.5¢ per mile when including 5-year depreciation and insurance. Calculating your cost per mile is the single most accurate method to compare vehicles, evaluate rideshare driving profitability, or calculate business mileage deductions.

What Elements Are Included in Your Car's Cost Per Mile?

Operating cost per mile combines variable expenses (which scale directly with every mile driven) and fixed annual expenses divided across your total annual mileage:

Cost Per Mile Formula:

Cost Per Mile (Cents) = [(Annual Energy + Maintenance + Tires + Insurance + Fees) ÷ Annual Miles] × 100

  • Fuel or Electricity: The variable cost per mile equals Gas Price ÷ MPG or (kWh per mile × Rate) × Efficiency Loss Factor. For a 30 MPG car with $3.30 gas, fuel alone costs 11.0¢ per mile. For an EV (30 kWh/100mi at 16¢/kWh), electricity costs 5.4¢ per mile.
  • Routine Maintenance: Oil changes, fluid flushes, brake service, wipers, and filters. Averages between 3.2¢ and 6.5¢ per mile depending on age and powertrain type.
  • Tire Wear & Replacement: Tires wear out every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Standard passenger car tires add roughly 1.2¢ to 2.2¢ per mile driven.
  • Fixed Overhead (Insurance & Registration): Fixed costs divided across mileage. If insurance costs $1,500/year and you drive 15,000 miles, insurance adds 10.0¢ per mile. If you only drive 5,000 miles, insurance adds 30.0¢ per mile!

Average Operating Cost Per Mile Benchmarks by Vehicle Class

Here is how average operating costs (fuel + maintenance + tires) and total costs (including depreciation & insurance) stack up across major vehicle segments at 15,000 miles/year:

Vehicle Class Fuel / Energy Cents/Mi Maint & Tires Cents/Mi Operating Cost/Mi Total Cost/Mi (Inc. Deprec & Ins)
Compact Sedan (e.g. Civic) 9.4¢ / mi 4.2¢ / mi 13.6¢ / mi 36.5¢ / mi
Compact Gasoline SUV (e.g. RAV4) 11.0¢ / mi 4.8¢ / mi 15.8¢ / mi 41.2¢ / mi
Gasoline Hybrid SUV (e.g. RAV4 Hybrid) 8.3¢ / mi 3.8¢ / mi 12.1¢ / mi 35.8¢ / mi
Electric Crossover (e.g. Model Y) 5.4¢ / mi 3.6¢ / mi 9.0¢ / mi 39.4¢ / mi
Full-Size Truck (e.g. F-150) 16.5¢ / mi 6.2¢ / mi 22.7¢ / mi 54.8¢ / mi

How Annual Mileage Dramatically Changes Your Per-Mile Cost

One of the most important aspects of cost-per-mile analysis is the fixed-cost dilution effect. Because fixed expenses like vehicle depreciation, insurance, and annual registration remain constant regardless of whether you drive 5,000 or 25,000 miles, driving more miles lowers your overall cost per mile:

Annual Distance Driven Operating Cost (Fuel/Maint) Fixed Costs (Deprec/Ins) Total Cost Per Mile
5,000 miles / year $790 (15.8¢/mi) $4,200 (84.0¢/mi) 99.8¢ / mile
10,000 miles / year $1,580 (15.8¢/mi) $4,500 (45.0¢/mi) 60.8¢ / mile
15,000 miles / year $2,370 (15.8¢/mi) $4,800 (32.0¢/mi) 47.8¢ / mile
25,000 miles / year $3,950 (15.8¢/mi) $5,400 (21.6¢/mi) 37.4¢ / mile
Data Disclosure & Confidence: Efficiency ratings are EPA-rated. Maintenance and depreciation reflect empirical industry data. IRS standard mileage rates (e.g. 67¢/mi) reflect nationwide business averages including heavy depreciation overhead.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cost Per Mile

DriveCost multiplies your estimated annual gallons by the gasoline price you enter (or the national average). Estimated gallons = annual miles ÷ weighted MPG, where weighted MPG blends the EPA city and highway ratings using your city/highway driving split.

EPA ratings come from standardized lab tests at fueleconomy.gov. They are useful for comparing vehicles, but real-world economy varies with weather, traffic, speed, terrain, vehicle condition and driving style. DriveCost labels them "EPA-rated" and treats them as estimates.

Cost per mile = total annual operating costs ÷ annual miles. Operating costs include fuel or electricity, maintenance, tires and other recurring costs you enter. It excludes the one-time purchase price and depreciation.

Five-year energy cost is the annual energy cost multiplied by your ownership period. The full five-year ownership view also adds estimated maintenance, tires, depreciation and optional insurance/registration, using documented assumptions that are shown on the methodology page.
